A Dog Fight In NU's Backyard

The Nebraska Cornhuskers had a fight on their hands,Saturday September 10,at Memorial Stadium. Facing the Fresno State Bulldogs didn't seem like such a challenge to the fans, seeing that
Fresno wasn't even in the Top 25. And yet they were up 17-14 when halftime arrived. They burned the Husker defense and gave Taylor Martinez and company a hard time. Oh,Martinez and Burkhead still put up big numbers. Martinez rushed for 166 yards on 15 carries, with 2 touchdowns.
Right now he's third in the nation in rushing yards. His passing stats weren't out of this world, but improved from the season-opener. He was 10 of 21 for 219 yards and a touchdown. And well...he threw 2 interceptions, and fumbled once. Yet,those things just have to be cleaned up. Burkhead had 15 carries for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns. We can always count on him to mop up the messes. :)
As for the younger running backs, would you beleive me if I told you the Ameer Abdullah broke Johnny Rodgers record in punt return yards? Well, you better because that is what happened. The 18 year-old Freshmen had a total of 211 yards in punt returning, and most amazingly,a 100 yard punt return that lifted NU up in the early 4th quarter. Could he of asked for a better night? If anybody was a star on Saturday night,it was Abdullah. Now,the Blackshirts were a different story. The Bulldog offense put 444 yards of offense on them, and QB Derek Carr put 241 yards of passing on the secondary. Definitely wasn't what Husker fan's or even the Blackshirts, were expecting. They were also 13 of 20 on third down conversions. While the Blackshirts didn't have the best night of their long tradition, they certainly aren't looking down on opposing offenses any more, that much I can tell you. (Unless their like the worst offense in the nation.) The Washington Huskies come to Lincoln next week, and the question is,will the Huskers be completely, totally, can't do anymore, ready? We'll have to wait and find out. :)
